Due to the severity and earliness of Idaho winters, we were really hoping to get Penny (our adorable flip house – meet her here!) all shiny by November. Cue: Flip House Demo Day.
Alexa, play “You Don’t Always Get What You Want” by the Rolling Stones.
Even though, sadly, we couldn’t get her done that quickly, we made huge strides in our first three weeks! We had a quick demo day process, removing tons of bugs and taping the layout. Our flip house was treated to new electrical, plumbing, and more, all in three weeks! See what Penny looked like the day we bought her…
The cherry on top was getting to partner with THE Home Depot! That was definitely a pinch-me moment. More to come on that. After demo, here is where we were at with the loft (the space I am MOST excited about).
And what about when they’re not? We were so blessed to find this hidden gem but didn’t know what else would be hiding within her walls. Demo day reveals all!
Once we started knocking down walls, we realized that all the electrical in the house had gone bad. After further investigating, we discovered that the house panel had been recalled.

Despite some of the setbacks, demo day was a ton of fun. The whole family was involved (if you want to entertain 3-8-year-olds, have them throw away pieces of the wall), and it moved relatively quickly!
Next Step: Plumbing
While nothing was inherently wrong with the plumbing, I let my creative eye do some work here. The kitchen plumbing was originally underneath a window that didn’t really look out on anything too appealing.
We decided to switch that up and move the sink underneath a bigger window with more appealing views.
Amidst all the craziness, we also found (you’ll never guess how many) TWELVE ancient power tools- including a corded drill! It was like stepping into a time machine, and it was also pretty bittersweet to think about all the memories that once lived here and the new ones that will be made.
Our journey with Penny this year has indeed been a testament to the power of turning dreams into reality. The flip house became a pivotal chapter in our lives in a few short months. While we’re currently stalled and waiting for some materials, we are excited to get back to working on Penny and have her ready for sale in the spring!
Make sure to follow along on Instagram to keep up with Penny, and if you’re in the market for a mini-home in rural Idaho, I might know a place. *wink wink*
I LOVE that you’ve named the house! It makes working on the home seem more personal. We recently bought a similar home a few miles from our current house so it’s easy to get to when we have any extra time to work on it, we’re in the demo stage right now, complete with a dumpster rental and pest control coming to spray next week. Thank you for sharing, I’m excited to see your results!!
