Looking for DIY playroom ideas for small spaces? Today, I’m covering all the details about our kids playroom loft makeover!
Do you ever walk into a part of your house and think, “I REALLY need to change up this space.” If so, same (honestly, story of my life!). One day, I looked at the kids loft and decided I needed to give it a major refresh. I wanted to create the ultimate kids playroom that was not only functional but bold, bright, and fun! This space is my kids’ hub for play, imagination, and creativity, so I wanted the loft to reflect that in its design. Here’s how I made it happen!
Welcome to phase one of my DIY playroom makeover, where I break up the process into multiple projects and take you along the journey with me! First up is the accent wall mural and the toy storage and organization setup. I hope this gives you some kids playroom ideas to work with as you gather your room inspo. Add this one to your list of DIY playroom ideas for small spaces!
Why use kids playroom wallpaper when you can paint your own? Don’t get me wrong—I love me some wallpaper in my DIY projects, but this time around, I wanted to try my hand at making the wall my own personal canvas. There are so many possibilities and directions to take with wall murals! They totally transform a space and, in this case, give it pops of color and a playful vibe. Plus it saves you $$$!
The first step was figuring out what design I wanted to do. As I was scrolling for inspo, as you do, I was inspired by a wacky and whimsical image I came across. When I shared my plans for the wall, let’s just say I got some mixed reactions. So, I decided to tone it down a bit and make it my own. I wanted to make the room feel fun but not TOO insane, so this wall, while very wild, will be calmed down by other elements that I’ll add to the room.
For the color palette, I went with pretty much every color of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple—yep, I think that’s literally ALL of the colors. This was a fun trip to Home Depot to pick out all the paint colors, with bright hues to liven up the space. I knew my kids would love it when it all came together!
Once I had my many paint cans in tow, I started setting up the space. I used plastic covering to keep my floors mess-free and two types of painter’s tape for multi-surface and delicate surfaces. Then I grabbed a ladder to reach those higher-up spots on the wall. Now, it was time to get my paint on!
I first drew the shapes on the wall with a pencil and then grabbed my paintbrushes. I used two big paint brushes (these are my top pics: 1st choice and 2nd choice) and some smaller detail brushes. I worked in sections and used multiple brushes to avoid rinsing the same brush over and over again. I was channeling my inner Picasso as I painted abstract shapes, lines, and patterns on the wall.
The end result? A masterpiece mural wall, if you ask me. She’s beautiful and a little bit extra, but we love her!
The next step for the kids playroom glow up, is of course, the kids playroom furniture! If you’re a mom like me (I have three kiddos at home!), you know that organization will literally keep you sane. As your kids play, the toys and who knows what else will inevitably end up all across the floor (it IS called a playroom, after all). When it’s clean-up time, Mary Poppins unfortunately won’t be around to magically organize for you.
Instead, when you want to tidy up, having plenty of storage for toys, crafts, and other kid-related things is the way to go. And not just any storage, something that fits everything, is functional, and looks nice too! This sleek Better Homes & Garden storage cabinet from Walmart has it all.
While I was painting the mural wall, my husband Justin worked on assembling our snazzy new toy storage cabinet. The light honey wood finish was the perfect neutral to sit in front of the colorful mural wall. With four doors and two-tier adjustable shelving, there’s plenty of space for storage bins, toys, books, art supplies, etc. And my favorite part? The magnetic cabinet catches with the soft close feature, which is EVERYTHING.
I couldn’t be happier with how the kids playroom makeover is coming along! Wall murals are so much fun, and my vision for ours turned out to be everything I imagined and more. The storage cabinet fits the room perfectly and safely stows all of our kids’ stuff inside. And this is just the beginning!
Stay tuned for part two, where I’ll add built-in shelving along the window wall, complete with a window bench seat. I’ll also incorporate a book nook and other quirky things for the kids, such as a Lego-building area and art station (and anything else that comes to mind!).
