Want to plan the ultimate DIY birthday party? I’ve got all the details ahead! Those that know me, know I love a theme, and I also love a party, especially one that I can DIY, get creative with, and not spend a fortune on! So, when it came time to start brainstorming birthday party ideas for kids in preparation for my son’s 6th birthday, I knew this had to be a roaring good time. Enter the dinosaur birthday party theme—this was perfect! I mean, what child isn’t fascinated by dinosaurs (who am I kidding? They’re pretty cool as an adult, too!).
The idea of a dinosaur themed birthday party got me excited, and I started thinking of all the dinosaur birthday party decorations I could incorporate. I wanted to bring the Jurassic theme to life, complete with dinosaur birthday party supplies to make my own favors (with the help of my trusty Cricut machine) and activity stations for the kids to explore with their imagination. Up next, I’ll walk you through what you need and how to make your own DIY dinosaur party decor and favors. Let the prehistoric party planning commence!
From fossils to fun, it’s time to gather all of the dinosaur birthday party supplies! When I was prepping for this party, I used a combination of things I already had at home, plus great finds on Amazon and at Walmart, to make the dinosaur birthday party really come to life. I found some amazing deals on supplies, which I’ll link below in the checklist for you.
This checklist is here to make your life easier when you start shopping for dinosaur themed birthday party supplies. This includes everything I used for the decorations, party favors, and activities for the kids. The best part? None of these items broke the bank (love to party on a budget and affordable ways to decorate!)
These are all of the supplies I used for my son’s party, but don’t hesitate to make it your own and go wild with your creativity. Now, let’s move on to how I put everything together for a dino-mite party the kids loved!
Now, here’s how I gave my 6-year-old the best dinosaur birthday party ever! There are three phases to how I made it happen: creating the party favors, setting up the activity stations, and decorating the space. Dinosaurs may be extinct, but my passion for DIY birthday party decorations and favors is alive and kicking!
The idea here was to fully immerse the kids into the Jurassic period and make them feel like they were paleontologists discovering dinosaurs. So, I busted out my Cricut (total game-changer for crafting!) and got to work! First up, I created custom t-shirts with iron-on vinyl for each party goer incorporating THEIR own name, like “Riggasaurus Rex” and “Theo-Saurus” with a T-Rex outline. Next, I added a dino skeleton to the cotton tote bags, where I stored all of their party favors. The bags had their custom shirts, safari hats, and name badges for entry to the park, which I also created for each guest.
Next, it’s time to come up with fun activities to keep the kids engaged and excited. I set up a table and chairs for a crafting station. Then, I put a layer of brown kraft paper on the table and added dinosaur coloring sheets, colored pencils, and dinosaur toys. I also created a free play area with a green leaves backdrop with more dinosaur toys for the kids. And finally, I used a corner of the room to make a dino hideout area with blankets and camouflage netting. I wanted to set the party up for play and imagination (which was a wild success if I do say so myself!).
Now it’s time for the finishing touches for the dinosaur birthday party decorations! Using the balloon pump, we blew up a bunch of balloons to make an archway for the entrance of the dinosaur park. Then, we also had some Jurassic Park-themed balloons to put around the party room. Using faux leather fabric and RH Adhesives glue, I created a sign with my Cricut that said, “Home Is Wherever I’m With You.” I used brown kraft paper and markers to create a control panel on the wall. Then, I made faux electrical fences complete with warning signs to further immerse the kids into the dinosaur park theme.
I can hear the Jurassic Theme music playing now, as my 6-year-old had the dinosaur birthday party of his dreams! For his big birthday present, I gifted him this hoverboard, and he’s been having a total blast with it! The kids loved the party, and most importantly, we made the best memories for my son, his friends, and my family. Thanks to the awesome finds on Amazon and Walmart, along with my Cricut, this whole project was a breeze to make a reality. Now, I’m already gearing up for the next party theme!
